Over 20 attendees explored the importance of preserving the island’s night sky through expert-led discussions and practical experiences. Renowned Experts in Light Pollution The event featured notable speakers like Federico de la Paz from the IAC's Sky Protection Office and Susana Malón, CEO of Lumínica Ambiental. They shared insights on challenges, consequences, and innovative strategies to combat light pollution. Alongside them, Ana García, CEO of AstroLaPalma, played an active role in discussions and hands-on activities. La Palma: A Global Leader in Sky Conservation La Palma’s commitment to sky protection draws global recognition, benefiting astronomy and astrotourism alike. Workshops like these emphasize the need for community involvement to maintain this unique natural and cultural resource. Although we can’t see them directly, their powerful effects on the surrounding space can be detected. Black holes form when a massive star collapses under its own gravity, creating a singularity—a point where density and gravity become infinite. A black hole is a region of space where gravity is so intense that nothing, not even light, can escape. It forms when a massive star reaches the final phase of its life, with no nuclear reactions left, and collapses inward, creating a “singularity” at its core—a point of infinite density. Surrounding this singularity is the event horizon, a boundary beyond which nothing can escape. Although we can’t see them directly, astronomers detect black holes by observing how they affect nearby stars and gas. The Mystery of the Singularity What makes a black hole so fascinating is its *singularity*, a region at its core where gravity is so intense that all matter is concentrated in an extremely small space. This collapse distorts space-time—the very fabric of the universe. According to Einstein’s theory of general relativity, this distortion is so extreme that nothing, not even light, can escape. This is what defines the eevent horizon, a "boundary" beyond which everything that approaches is trapped forever. Due to its clarity, beauty, and darkness, this island has become a global reference for astronomical observation, being one of the best places to admire the cosmos. However, light pollution always threatens this invaluable resource, affecting both science and enjoyment of the sky as well as biodiversity. It is estimated that light pollution increases by 2% every year. For this reason we have organised the following public talks in La Palma to raise awareness about light pollution issues and to continue the protection of our skies. The talks are organised by AstroLaPalma, as part of AstroFest La Palma 2024 Date and Location - Date: November 15, 2024 - Location: Tazacorte, La Palma - Time: 18:00 This event is part of a series of activities during AstroFest 2024, highlighting La Palma's astronomical and cultural wealth while promoting respect and conservation of the nocturnal environment. Over the last few weeks, we have been fortunate enough to capture it in its splendour, and thanks to the expert astrophotographer Ana García, we have been able to immortalise this comet as it streaks across the dark skies of our island. Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) A Unique Visitor, Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is a celestial body making a hyperbolic orbit, which means that it is passing close to the Sun for the first and only time. This makes it a truly special visit, because once it leaves our solar system, it will not return. From La Palma, thanks to the quality of our dark skies, this comet has been visible and capturable in photographs, giving us stunning images that reflect its brightness, its tail and the changing position night after night. Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS): A messenger from the far reaches of the Solar SystemTsuchinshan-ATLAS What is a comet? Comets, such as C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS), are celestial bodies composed mainly of ice, dust, and frozen gases. As they approach the Sun, the heat causes the ices to sublimate, releasing gases and dust. This sublimation results in the formation of the coma (the bright cloud around the nucleus) and its characteristic tails, making each comet a messenger of the far reaches of the solar system. By observing their orbits, we can gather clues about how gravitational interactions with giant planets like Jupiter and Saturn have influenced these icy bodies, altering their trajectories and sending them from the outer regions toward the Sun. There are two comet tails: the dust tail, which reflects sunlight, and the ionised gas tail, which glows when it interacts with the solar wind. This behaviour is key to understanding the evolution and physical state of comets, as it allows us to observe in real time how they respond to the Sun's heat. Comet tails can extend millions of kilometres into space, and in the case of C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS), its tail is expected to be remarkably visible during its closest approach. C/2023 A3: Origin and Trajectory This comet has travelled from the Oort Cloud, a region at the edge of the solar system approximately 100,000 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, which is equivalent to 15 trillion kilometres. The Oort Cloud is a reservoir of comets and icy objects that have not been significantly altered since the formation of the solar system some 4.6 billion years ago. Comets like C/2023 A3 are interesting because, coming from this distant region, they bring with them material that has been largely unchanged since the time of planet formation. This makes

Success of the ‘Telescope Meeting’ in Puntallana: A night of astronomy and awareness under the starry sky On Friday 27 September, in the municipality of Puntallana, the long-awaited ‘Telescope Meeting’ took place, an event that brought together around 60 people, including families with children. The purpose of the starparty was to spend a night dedicated to astronomical observation while raising awareness about the protection of dark skies. During the event, which was part of AstroFest 2024, educational talks focused on how to observe the sky and the importance of preserving our skies from light pollution. As part of the commitment to this cause, the luminaires near the Puntallana Town Hall were turned off, allowing attendees a quality astronomical experience. The meeting not only focused on the theoretical aspect. Participants had also the opportunity to learn how to operate telescopes, bringing the fascinating world of astronomy even closer to those present. Children and adults immersed themselves in the observation of stars, planets and other celestial bodies, enjoying an unforgettable evening under a clear sky. The active participation and enthusiasm of all attendees once again demonstrated the growing interest in astronomy on the island. These types of activities not only promote scientific knowledge, but also strengthen awareness of the need to preserve our skies, a priceless natural heritage.
