If no available dates appear in the calendar, it usually means one of the following:

• The experience is fully booked for those dates.
• We have not yet published the schedule for that period.
• That particular experience is not available on the selected dates.

We publish our calendar several months in advance. If your travel dates are not yet available, we recommend checking back later or contacting us. We will be happy to let you know when new dates are released.

If an experience is fully booked, we may also be able to add you to a waiting list in case a place becomes available due to a cancellation.

Most online booking issues can be resolved quickly and easily.

Before trying again, we recommend that you:

• Check that your card is enabled for online payments.
• Complete any bank authentication required by your payment provider.

In addition to our regular schedule, we organise private astronomy experiences for groups, companies, schools, universities, conferences, organised trips and special celebrations.

Each experience is tailored to the profile of the participants and can combine astronomy outreach, stargazing, visits to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, or private experiences designed specifically for each group.

If you are organising a trip, corporate event or educational activity, we would be delighted to prepare a personalised proposal.

It depends on the time of year and the type of experience.

During the high season, public holidays, Easter, Christmas and special astronomical events, many experiences sell out weeks or even months in advance.

Experiences with small groups and Private Tours usually have more limited availability, so we recommend booking as early as possible once you know your travel dates.

If your trip is approaching and you cannot find availability, please contact us. We will always do our best to help if there is an alternative.

Private Tours are not scheduled as regular experiences with open bookings.

Each tour is designed specifically for each reservation, taking into account guide availability, duration, the number of participants, the type of experience you are looking for and, where appropriate, additional services such as night photography or transfers.

For this reason, Private Tours do not appear in our general booking calendar.

If you are interested in a Private Tour, simply send us your request. We will let you know our availability and help you choose the option that best suits your interests and travel dates.

The quality of every experience is always our highest priority.

Before each experience, we carefully assess the weather forecast and the actual sky conditions to determine whether the stargazing experience can take place with the level of quality we expect.

If the conditions are not suitable, we will contact you as soon as possible to offer the available alternatives, such as rescheduling your experience or providing a refund in accordance with our booking conditions.

Our goal is never to run an experience simply because it is scheduled. We would rather postpone it than offer an experience that does not meet the standards you expect from AstroLaPalma.

We understand that travel plans can sometimes change.

Each of our experiences clearly states its cancellation policy before you complete your booking, as some activities, such as the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory Tour, have specific cancellation conditions due to the way places are managed.

If you need to cancel your booking, we recommend contacting us as soon as possible. We will always do our best to help you within the cancellation conditions that apply to your chosen experience.

If an activity has to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions or any other circumstances that prevent it from taking place safely or as planned, we will offer you the options set out in our booking conditions.

All bookings made through our website can be paid using the payment methods displayed during the booking process.

For some Private Tours and tailor-made experiences, specific payment options may be available. If this applies, we will provide all the necessary information when confirming your booking.

Private tours have been part of AstroLaPalma since 2021. Over the years, we have continuously refined these experiences to offer fully personalised astronomy tours tailored to each group’s interests, pace and level of knowledge.

Our Stargazing Tours are designed for anyone who wants to discover the night sky of La Palma for the first time. They are engaging, educational and suitable for all ages, with no previous astronomy knowledge required.

Our Premium Experiences, such as Stars & Sunset and selected Masterclasses, are organised in very small groups, usually between 6 and 8 participants. This is not a random number. Over the years, we have found that small groups allow everyone to spend more time at the telescope, ask questions freely and enjoy a much more personal and relaxed experience.

Private Tours are different. They are designed exclusively for a couple, a family or a group travelling together. The pace of the activity, the objects you observe, the level of the explanations and even the duration of the experience can all be tailored to your interests and expectations.

Our goal has never been to organise large-scale tours. We believe that the best astronomy experiences are those where every participant finishes the evening understanding what they have seen—not simply looking through a telescope.

A Private Stargazing Tour is the perfect choice when you are looking for an experience tailored entirely to you.

It is ideal for couples, families, small groups of friends, astronomy enthusiasts, night photography lovers, special celebrations, or simply for anyone who wants to enjoy the night sky at their own pace and away from larger groups.

Since 2021, AstroLaPalma has been designing and delivering private astronomy experiences in La Palma. Over the years, we have learned that no two groups are the same. Some guests want to search for distant galaxies, others prefer to learn how to navigate the night sky using the constellations, while many simply wish to admire the Milky Way in peace and silence.

That is why we do not offer a standard private tour. Before confirming your booking, we like to understand what you are looking for so we can recommend — and, whenever possible, tailor — the experience that best matches your interests, expectations and level of astronomy knowledge.

For us, that personalised attention begins long before the tour itself. It is an essential part of the experience.

Because we believe that the quality of an astronomy experience depends on much more than the telescope.

Above all, it depends on the time that the guide can dedicate to each participant.

In a small group, there is time to answer questions, adapt the explanations to the participants, allow everyone to observe through the telescope without rushing, and help each person understand what they are seeing. That personal interaction is almost impossible to achieve in larger groups.

For this reason, our Premium Experiences, Stars & Sunset, and many of our Masterclasses are usually limited to 6 to 8 participants.

This is not a marketing strategy. It is a decision based on years of experience designing and leading stargazing experiences in La Palma.

We would much rather every guest goes home with a real understanding of the night sky than simply having looked at as many objects as possible through a telescope.

Yes. Many of our experiences are suitable for families.

In general, we recommend our stargazing experiences for children aged 4 and over. There is no maximum age for enjoying astronomy, but it is important to remember that many of the explanations are designed for a general audience and may be difficult for younger children to follow.

Every child is different. If your child is curious about the night sky, enjoys looking through a telescope and is happy to spend time outdoors during the experience, they will most likely have an unforgettable evening.

For the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory Tour, children under the age of 6 are not permitted, as access to the professional telescopes is subject to specific safety regulations.

The meeting point depends on the experience you have booked and is always clearly indicated in the activity description, your confirmation email and your booking tickets.

For most of our stargazing experiences in La Palma, the meeting point is our office in Los Cancajos (Breña Baja). From there, your guide will lead the group to the observing location selected for that evening.

Our Roque de los Muchachos Observatory Visits have a different meeting point. Participants meet directly at the Observatory Visitor Centre, as this is a separate experience.

If you have booked a private experience with included transport, we will contact you in advance with your pick-up location and time.

We recommend checking your booking details a few days before your experience. If you have any questions, we will be happy to help.

For most of our experiences, yes, you will need access to a car.

We usually operate on a self-drive basis, which means that participants either drive to the meeting point or follow the guide in their own vehicle to the observing location.

This allows us to choose the best stargazing location every night, depending on cloud cover, wind, humidity and sky conditions. Rather than using the same viewpoint every time, we select the location that offers the highest-quality observing conditions.

A 4×4 vehicle is not required. A standard car is sufficient to reach all the locations where our stargazing experiences take place.

Some experiences include transport from the meeting point. This is the case for Stars & Sunset and the Premium Private Tour, where transport to the observing site is included.

All our astronomy experiences are designed to be accessible with a standard passenger car.

We do not use unpaved roads, forest tracks or routes that require a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Yes.

Many of our guests travel around La Palma by motorhome or campervan and join our experiences without any difficulty.

If you are travelling by motorcycle, you are also welcome to take part. However, please remember that our stargazing experiences take place in the mountains. Even if the weather is pleasant on the coast, you may pass through the sea of clouds during the drive and encounter rain before climbing above the clouds. Temperatures can also drop significantly after sunset, even in summer.

For this reason, if you are travelling by motorcycle, warm clothing and suitable mountain riding gear are essential.

If you do not have access to a car or rental car, please contact us before booking.

If you enjoy night photography, you are welcome to bring your camera and tripod. Whenever the experience allows, we will be happy to offer a few tips to help you capture memorable images of La Palma’s night sky.

Yes. Safety is an essential part of the planning of every AstroLaPalma experience.

Before each experience, we carefully assess the weather forecast, sky conditions and the observing location to ensure that the activity can take place safely and with the level of quality we expect.

Our guides have many years of experience leading stargazing experiences in La Palma and know the island’s roads, viewpoints and observing conditions extremely well.

If we believe that conditions are not suitable, we would rather change the observing location, reschedule or cancel the experience than compromise safety or quality.

Our goal is for you to enjoy the night sky of La Palma with complete confidence and peace of mind.

In many cases, yes.

We offer astronomy experiences suitable for people of different ages and mobility levels. However, each experience is different, and some require walking a short distance or standing for part of the observation.

The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory Tour is often an excellent option for visitors with reduced mobility. The Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) is equipped with a lift, making it easier to access the different levels during the visit.

Please note that the Observatory is located at over 2,000 metres (6,560 ft) above sea level. For this reason, pregnant women, adults over the age of 70, and anyone with cardiovascular, respiratory or other medical conditions should consult their doctor before taking part.

For safety reasons, children under the age of 6 are not permitted on the Observatory Tour.

The duration depends on the experience you have booked.

Each experience clearly states its duration before you complete your booking.

As a general guide, our stargazing experiences usually last around 2 hours, plus the driving time from the meeting point to the observing location. The journey time varies depending on the observing site selected that evening according to the weather conditions.

The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory Tour lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.

For Private Tours and Masterclasses, the duration may vary depending on the experience you choose.

Temperatures at our observing locations are usually much lower than on the coast, even during the summer months.

We recommend wearing warm clothing, comfortable footwear and dressing in layers. At altitudes above 2,000 metres (6,560 ft), temperatures often drop significantly after sunset.

Even if it is warm on the coast, you may pass through the sea of clouds during the drive and even encounter rain before reaching the clear skies above the clouds. For this reason, it is important to come prepared for mountain conditions.

Being warm and comfortable will allow you to enjoy the experience much more and focus on what really matters: exploring and understanding the night sky.

Most of our astronomy experiences are available in English and Spanish.

Whenever possible, we organise language-specific groups so that everyone can comfortably follow the explanations and enjoy the experience to the fullest.

The mountain roads in La Palma are fully paved and are used every day by residents, visitors and those travelling to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory.

As with any mountain road, we recommend driving carefully, especially at night. However, they do not present any unusual difficulty for drivers who are accustomed to normal roads.

Our guides know these routes extremely well and, whenever necessary, will lead the way from the meeting point to the observing location.

The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory is an international astrophysics research centre, home to some of the world’s most advanced telescopes. These telescopes are dedicated exclusively to scientific research and are not used for visual observations with visitors.

During the Observatory Tour, you will have the opportunity to explore professional telescopes such as the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), discover how astronomers work and learn how the Universe is studied at one of the world’s leading astronomical observatories.

One of the main reasons why La Palma has one of the best night skies in the world for astronomy is the legal protection of its dark skies.

The Canary Islands Sky Law regulates aspects such as outdoor lighting, radio emissions and certain activities that could affect the quality of astronomical observations. Its purpose is to protect the exceptional observing conditions of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory and the other observatories operated by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC).

The Moon is one of the most fascinating objects to observe through a telescope. In fact, for many visitors, seeing its craters, mountains and shadows in detail becomes one of the highlights of the night.

What changes is which celestial objects are best to observe. During a Full Moon, its bright light illuminates the night sky, making very faint objects such as distant galaxies and some nebulae more difficult to see. On the other hand, it is the perfect time to enjoy spectacular views of the Moon itself, as well as planets and many bright star clusters.

At AstroLaPalma, we adapt every stargazing experience in La Palma to the lunar phase and the actual sky conditions on the night of your tour. This allows us to choose the most suitable celestial objects for observation and ensure you enjoy the best possible experience.

There are no “good” or “bad” nights for astronomy. Every night offers a different sky, and each season reveals new wonders of the Universe.

We do not have a single fixed stargazing location.

Instead, we carefully select the best observing site every evening based on the current sky and weather conditions.

La Palma has a very complex microclimate. Wind direction, cloud cover, humidity and local weather patterns can make one viewpoint perfect on a particular night and far less suitable the next.

Thanks to our many years of experience leading stargazing experiences across La Palma, we carefully assess the weather forecast and real-time sky conditions before every activity to choose the most suitable location.

Some nights we observe close to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. On other occasions, another astronomical viewpoint may offer better conditions. Our priority is never to visit the same place every night, but to take you to the best possible location for that particular evening.

We believe this flexibility is one of the reasons why our stargazing experiences are so special and why every night under the stars is unique.

During our experiences, we usually observe the Moon (when visible), planets, star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, double stars, and other deep-sky objects, always selecting the best targets according to the season and the observing conditions.

It is important to remember that the human eye does not see the night sky in the same way as the images published by NASA or major observatories. Those spectacular photographs are created using long exposures and sophisticated image processing techniques.

However, seeing these celestial objects through a telescope with your own eyes, knowing that the light reaching you has travelled for thousands or even millions of years across the Universe, is an unforgettable experience that no photograph can truly replace.

In many cases, yes.

The astrophysicists working at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory study galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, stars, planets, comets and many other celestial objects using highly specialised scientific instruments.

During our stargazing experiences, we also observe many of these same objects through astronomical telescopes designed for visual observation. The difference is that our goal is not scientific research, but to help you discover and understand the night sky with your own eyes.

Depending on the time of year and the observing conditions, you may observe some of the same celestial objects that are part of the Observatory’s research programmes while our guides explain what you are seeing and why these objects are important for understanding the Universe.

Because NASA images and those produced by major observatories do not show exactly what the human eye sees.

Most of these images are created using long exposures, ranging from several minutes to many hours. During that time, telescopes collect far more light than our eyes can perceive in a single glance.

In addition, many images combine photographs taken through different filters to reveal chemical elements, temperatures and physical processes that are invisible to human vision. They are then digitally processed to highlight scientific information.

One of the most important tools used by astrophysicists is spectroscopy. Rather than simply taking a picture, they analyse the light emitted by stars, galaxies and nebulae by splitting it into a spectrum, much like a prism separates white light into the colours of the rainbow. This allows scientists to determine the chemical composition of celestial objects, measure their temperature and motion, and even discover planets orbiting other stars. In many scientific images, the colours do not represent what the human eye would actually see, but rather scientific information that helps us better understand the Universe.

When you observe the night sky through a telescope with your own eyes, you see the Universe as human vision naturally perceives it. Although the colours are usually much more subtle than in photographs, the experience is extraordinary because you are looking directly at light that has travelled for thousands or even millions of years before reaching your eyes.

Most of our experiences are designed for the general public, so no previous knowledge of astronomy is required. Our guides adapt their explanations to the level of each group, using clear and accessible language so that everyone can understand and enjoy the night sky.

If you already have astronomy experience or are looking for a more advanced experience, our Premium Private Tours and Masterclasses can be tailored to your interests and level of knowledge, allowing for more in-depth discussions and specialised topics.

Our goal is for everyone to enjoy the night sky and learn something new, regardless of their previous experience.

The Moon is one of the most spectacular objects to observe through a telescope. Its craters, mountains and lunar seas provide fascinating views.

However, when the Moon is brightly illuminated, it also acts as a powerful natural light source, reducing the visibility of faint deep-sky objects such as galaxies and nebulae.

For this reason, AstroLaPalma does not normally schedule stargazing experiences during the Full Moon. Our calendar is carefully planned to provide the highest possible observing quality, and most of our activities take place when the Moon is illuminated by less than 75%.

During these nights, it is still possible to enjoy detailed views of the Moon while also observing planets, star clusters, nebulae and many other celestial objects.

Our goal is not simply to run activities every night, but to choose the moments when the sky offers the best possible experience.

The short answer is: all year round.

Each season offers a different night sky. As the Earth orbits the Sun, the visible constellations and many celestial objects change, meaning there is always something new to discover.

During summer, the Milky Way becomes the main attraction, making it an excellent season to observe nebulae, star clusters and the centre of our galaxy. In winter, constellations such as Orion, spectacular nebulae and numerous open star clusters dominate the sky.

Throughout the year, you may also enjoy astronomical events such as eclipses, meteor showers, planetary conjunctions and, occasionally, comets.

For this reason, there is no single best season for stargazing in La Palma. Every time of year offers a different sky, and our experiences are designed to make the most of whatever the Universe has to offer.
