Due to its clarity, beauty, and darkness, this island has become a global reference for astronomical observation, being one of the best places to admire the cosmos. However, light pollution always threatens this invaluable resource, affecting both science and enjoyment of the sky as well as biodiversity. It is estimated that light pollution increases by 2% every year. For this reason we have organised the following public talks in La Palma to raise awareness about light pollution issues and to continue the protection of our skies. The talks are organised by AstroLaPalma, as part of AstroFest La Palma 2024 Date and Location - Date: November 15, 2024 - Location: Tazacorte, La Palma - Time: 18:00 This event is part of a series of activities during AstroFest 2024, highlighting La Palma's astronomical and cultural wealth while promoting respect and conservation of the nocturnal environment. Experts in Dark Sky Protection The event will feature recognized speakers who will address the causes, effects, and solutions to light pollution in our communities. Susana Malón: Pioneer in the Fight Against Light Pollution Susana Malón is a leading figure in the defense of dark skies and the study of the impact of artificial light on our environment. Through her work, Susana explores how light pollution affects biodiversity, health, and quality of life, in addition to hindering astronomical observation. Her talk will provide a global and practical perspective on how we can minimize this growing problem. Susana Malón is the CEO of Lumínica Ambiental and has received various awards: - Starlight Award (2016): For her work in protecting dark skies and commitment to preserving areas free from light pollution. - First Prize for New Business Initiative awarded by the Ministry of the Environment.
