ASTROEXPERIENCE LA PALMA
In one of the best night skies in the world: The island of La Palma.
La Palma is a singular and unique island due to its environmental characteristics, which has led to it being recognised by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve, among other things. More than a third of its surface area is protected, with the Caldera de Taburiente National Park being the most outstanding example. Its relief, the result of a dramatic process of formation over millions of years, allows for a multitude of different microclimates, a surprising variety of landscapes and contrasting vegetation. At its highest point, at 2,426 metres, is the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, above the so-called ‘sea of clouds’. At El Roque de Los Muchachos there is a clean atmosphere, without turbulence, stabilised by the ocean and the trade winds. This is why this observatory is considered one of the best places in the world for observing the sky.
Thus, since 1988 La Palma has had a law for the protection of the quality of the sky, being the first Starlight certified Reserve in the world. From 2012 La Palma is also a Starlight Tourist Destination. All this guarantees the ability to enjoy star gazing and to discover the associated scientific, cultural, natural and scenic values. It was also on this island where, in 2007, many international organisations signed the World Declaration in Defence of the Night Sky and the Right to Observe the Stars (Starlight La Palma Declaration). In 2014 La Palma received the Plaque of Tourist Merit for emerging destinations for astrotourism. Since then, it has consolidated a multifaceted event such as the Astrofest La Palma. The island is, without a doubt, a paradise for lovers of observing the night sky.
Astronomy is a hobby
Astronomy, which for some is a profession and for others a hobby, has become for many a form of entertainment and learning.
