On Friday, November 15, the Casa de la Cultura in Tazacorte hosted a day workshop on light pollution aimed at raising awareness and educating participants about the adverse effects of excessive lighting on La Palma. Over 20 attendees explored the importance of preserving the island’s night sky through expert-led discussions and practical experiences.

Renowned Experts in Light Pollution

The event featured notable speakers like Federico de la Paz  from the IAC‘s Sky Protection Office and Susana Malón, CEO of Lumínica Ambiental. They shared insights on challenges, consequences, and innovative strategies to combat light pollution. Alongside them, Ana García, CEO of AstroLaPalma, played an active role in discussions and hands-on activities.

Following expert presentations, a debate allowed attendees to exchange views and explore community-driven solutions. The event concluded with a practical session, where participants experienced firsthand how regulated lighting impacts the night sky.

Institutional Collaboration

Supported by the Tourism Area of Cabildo de La Palma, coordinated by AstroLaPalma – LaPalmaStars, and backed by IAC’s Sky Protection Office, Lumínica Ambiental, and SODEPAL, the workshop highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in protecting the night sky.
