Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS: A Unique Spectacle Captured from La Palma

The sky over La Palma has once again surprised us with one of the most fascinating events of the year: the passage of comet C/2023 A3, also known as Suchinshan-ATLAS. Over the last few weeks, we have been fortunate enough to capture it in its splendour, and thanks to the expert astrophotographer Ana García, we have been able to immortalise this comet as it streaks across the dark skies of our island.

A Unique Visitor, Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is a celestial body making a hyperbolic orbit, which means that it is passing close to the Sun for the first and only time. This makes it a truly special visit, because once it leaves our solar system, it will not return. From La Palma, thanks to the quality of our dark skies, this comet has been visible and capturable in photographs, giving us stunning images that reflect its brightness, its tail and the changing position night after night.

Photographs of the Comet by Ana García

Ana García, astrophotographer and CEO of AstroLaPalma, has been immortalising every detail of the comet since its arrival. In the photos we share, you can see the comet’s movement in relation to the fixed stars and its nightly displacement due to the Earth’s rotation. These images are not only visually stunning, but also remind us of how ephemeral and dynamic the cosmos is.

The challenge of capturing the comet

One of the biggest challenges when photographing celestial bodies such as this comet is the need for completely dark skies and meticulous planning. The sky of La Palma, being a Starlight Reserve, offers ideal conditions for this type of observation. Ana García’s photos show us how, despite the variable conditions, it is possible to capture the beauty of these astronomical events with precision and detail.
