Guide to Observing the Geminids in 2024: The Shooting Star Spectacle

The night sky gives us unforgettable moments, and the Geminids are one of the most awaited events of the year for astro-tourism lovers. In 2024, this phenomenon will peak on the night of 13-14 December, promising a unique spectacle of meteors streaking across the sky. If you are planning to observe them, here is everything you need to know.

What are the Geminids?

The Geminids are one of the most intense and reliable meteor showers of the year, with rates of up to 120 meteors per hour at their peak. Unlike other meteor showers, they come from the asteroid 3200 Phaeton, which gives them a more rocky composition, making them brighter and more colourful.

This astronomical event is so named because it appears to originate from the constellation Gemini, which will be visible throughout the night on this date.

When and where to observe the Geminids in 2024?

Ideal date and time

The best time to observe the Geminids will be between midnight and the early morning hours of 14 December. However, this year the Moon will be nearly full, which will generate more illumination in the sky and could make it difficult to see the faintest meteors.

Despite this, if the weather is good and the sky is clear, you will be able to enjoy the brightest meteors, which are usually more spectacular.

Recommended places for astro-tourism

To maximise your chances of seeing the Geminids, choose a location away from light pollution. Some ideal destinations are:

  • National parks or nature reserves: Places protected from excessive artificial light.
Rural areas: Perfect for enjoying the dark sky.
  • Astrotourist viewpoints on La Palma: Known for its clear, protected skies, the island offers viewpoints such as the Roque de los Muchachos or the Mirador de las Ventas, ideal for observing the phenomenon. In fact, as every year, La Palma has an event in which it broadcasts the Geminids. You can access the link at: www.astrofestlapalma.es/ya-estan-aqui-las-geminidas/
  • Check the weather conditions to make sure that the sky is clear on the night of the event.

Tips for observing the Geminids

Necessary equipment

Although you do not need a telescope to enjoy the Geminids, follow these recommendations:
Recliner chair or blanket: Comfort is essential for hours of enjoyment.
Warm clothes and food: Be prepared for the December cold.
Torch with red light: Use it to move around without impairing your dark adaptation.
Identifying the constellation Gemini

The constellation Gemini will be your reference point. It will appear to the east after 9:00 pm. Look for the bright stars Castor and Pollux, which mark the place from which the meteors will appear to originate.

Patience and planning

Allow at least 15 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. Although the full Moon may dim some meteors, the brightest meteors will be visible and spectacular.
