Discover the Universe with AstroLaPalma’s Telescopes
The telescopes we use for stargazing in La Palma are an essential part of every astronomical experience, but the quality of an observing session depends on much more than the size of the telescope. Choosing the right instrument, having excellent sky conditions and being guided by an experienced astronomy guide are equally important to discover the Universe in the greatest possible detail.
At AstroLaPalma, we use a carefully selected range of Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain and large-aperture Dobsonian telescopes, chosen for their outstanding optical quality, reliability and exceptional performance under one of the best night skies on Earth.
Thanks to the exceptional astronomical conditions of La Palma—home to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and numerous telescopes operated by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC)—our guests can observe everything from lunar craters to galaxies located millions of light-years away.
Our goal is not to showcase telescopes.
Our goal is to help you understand the night sky.
Why do we use different telescopes?
There is no such thing as the perfect telescope for every situation.
Some telescopes provide extraordinary contrast for observing the Moon and planets, while others excel at collecting large amounts of light, revealing nebulae, galaxies and star clusters in impressive detail. The number of participants, the astronomical objects visible that night and the type of experience also influence which telescope is the best choice.
That is why AstroLaPalma uses several different telescope models, always selecting the one that best suits each experience.
Do we use all our telescopes during every experience?
No.
And that is entirely intentional.
Although we own several telescopes, it would make little sense to use every instrument during every activity.
Every night is different. Weather conditions, the Moon phase, the celestial objects we plan to observe and the size of the group all determine which telescope is the most suitable.
In addition, each of our guides usually works with the telescope they know best and feel most comfortable using. This allows them to focus on explaining the sky, answering questions and creating a more enjoyable experience instead of managing several different instruments at once.
Our goal is not to display as many telescopes as possible, but to use the most appropriate instrument so that every guest enjoys the night sky under the best possible conditions.
Our Telescopes
Celestron CPC 11″ (280 mm)
Added to our collection in 2026, this is AstroLaPalma’s largest telescope and one of the highlights of our astronomy experiences.
Its 280 mm aperture gathers an enormous amount of light, allowing spectacular observations of the Moon, planets, nebulae, galaxies and star clusters.
Its computerised GoTo system automatically locates hundreds of celestial objects, allowing more time for observation and scientific explanation.
Celestron CPC 9.25″
Many amateur astronomers consider the Celestron CPC 9.25 to be one of the finest Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes ever built.
Its exceptional balance of contrast, sharpness and optical quality makes it an outstanding instrument for observing Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, double stars and a huge variety of deep-sky objects.
Two Celestron CPC 8″
We operate two Celestron CPC 8 telescopes, one of the world’s most popular models thanks to its balance of size, performance and ease of use.
Its computerised GoTo system automatically locates hundreds of night-sky objects, making it ideal even for people looking through a telescope for the very first time.
Four 10-inch Dobsonian Telescopes
Dobsonian telescopes were originally designed to make deep-sky observing accessible to everyone through simple, robust instruments with large apertures.
Our 10-inch (254 mm) Dobsonians deliver bright and natural views of nebulae, galaxies and star clusters beneath La Palma’s exceptionally dark skies.
Their intuitive operation also makes them excellent instruments for learning practical astronomy.
8-inch Dobsonian Telescope
Our 8-inch Dobsonian completes the collection by offering an excellent balance between brightness, portability and image quality.
It is ideal for observing the Moon, planets and a wide variety of deep-sky objects, providing an excellent experience for both beginners and experienced amateur astronomers.
What is the difference between a Schmidt-Cassegrain and a Dobsonian telescope?
Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, such as the Celestron CPC models we use, are renowned for their outstanding optical quality, compact design and computerised GoTo systems, which automatically locate hundreds of celestial objects.
Dobsonian telescopes, on the other hand, prioritise aperture. Their large mirrors collect far more light, making them outstanding instruments for observing nebulae, galaxies and star clusters under dark skies.
The two designs complement each other perfectly, which is why both are part of our astronomy experiences.
Why do we use large-aperture telescopes?
Many people believe that magnification is the most important characteristic of a telescope.
In reality, the most important factor is its aperture—the diameter of the primary mirror or lens.
A larger aperture:
- collects more light;
- reveals fainter and more distant objects;
- increases visible detail;
- improves image brightness and quality.
For this reason, our telescopes have been carefully selected to make the most of La Palma’s exceptional night skies.
The Best Telescope Needs the Best Sky
Even the finest telescope cannot provide an outstanding observation without excellent observing conditions.
The quality of the sky is just as important—if not more important—than the telescope itself.
La Palma is recognised as one of the world’s premier astronomical destinations thanks to its extremely low light pollution, stable atmosphere, temperature inversion layer and the protection provided by the Canary Islands Sky Law.
These exceptional conditions led to the creation of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, home to some of the world’s most important research telescopes, including the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC).
