What is Starmus?

Starmus Festival starts now in La Palma! Starmus is one of the most important festivals in the world, bringing together science, art, music, and the exploration of the universe. Created to make scientific knowledge accessible to the public and celebrate advances in space exploration, it has featured prominent figures such as Stephen Hawking, Neil Armstrong, and Brian May (astrophysicist and guitarist of Queen).

In 2025, Starmus will be held for the first time in La Palma, an internationally recognized destination for its commitment to the conservation of the night sky and the development of sustainable astrotourism.

Starmus and Sky Conservation

La Palma’s selection as the festival venue is no accident. The island has been a pioneer in protecting the night sky and holds the Starlight Certification, which recognizes destinations committed to preserving the quality of the sky for astronomical observation.

Thanks to its light pollution legislation, La Palma is one of the best places on the planet to observe the stars. This event reinforces the island’s commitment to natural environment preservation, science outreach, and promoting astrotourism as a sustainable driver of local development.

Who organizes and funds Starmus in La Palma?

Starmus 2025 is organized by the Starmus Foundation, in collaboration with the Cabildo de La Palma, the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC), the Government of the Canary Islands, and supported with €3 million in funding from the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities.

La Palma was chosen for its international prestige in astronomy as well as its world-class infrastructure, particularly the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, home to some of the most advanced telescopes in the world.

In summary

Starmus 2025 will be more than just a festival: it will be a global celebration of science, music, and the starry sky, set in one of the best astrotourism destinations on the planet: La Palma.
