The ORM houses an extensive network of optical, infrared and high-energy telescopes, operated by scientific institutions from more than 20 countries. Thanks to its advanced infrastructure, it has been instrumental in research on exoplanets, cosmology, high-energy astrophysics, and stellar and galactic evolution.

Design and Capabilities of the GTC

The Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), also known as ‘GRANTECAN’, is the largest optical-infrared telescope in the world. Its 10.4-metre primary mirror, composed of 36 hexagonal segments, allows it to capture an unprecedented amount of light, achieving exceptional resolution and sensitivity.

The GTC is equipped with a series of state-of-the-art instruments that allow it to address a wide range of astronomical research:

2. Characterisation of exoplanets: Using high-resolution spectroscopy, the GTC has detected the atmospheric composition of exoplanets, identifying the presence of water, methane and carbon dioxide in planetary atmospheres outside the Solar System.
Supernovae and transient events: The telescope has been crucial in the study of supernovae, detecting and characterising stellar explosions that help to understand the evolution of massive stars and the production of heavy elements in the universe.
4. Gravitational waves and high-energy events: The GTC has been used for the optical follow-up of neutron star mergers detected by LIGO and Virgo, helping to identify the kilonovae that result from these events.

The Great Telescope of the Canary Islands (GRANTECAN)

The Grantecan is one of the largest optical and infrared telescopes in the world, with a primary mirror of 10.4 metres in diameter. Consequently, this light-gathering capacity allows astronomers to explore the cosmos with unprecedented clarity, revealing the mysteries of stars, galaxies and other celestial bodies.

Since its inauguration in 2009, Grantecan has been at the centre of important scientific discoveries, such as the detection of exoplanets and the study of the dark matter and dark energy that make up the Universe. Every night, the telescope’s eyes turn skyward, exploring the far reaches of the cosmos and expanding our understanding of the universe we inhabit.

Visit Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory

The visits proposed by AstroLaPalma are guided tours during the day, in which the facilities are shown, including the interior of the Grantecan. This type of visit is only permitted for people over 6 years of age and, if you are over 70 years of age, it is advisable to consult a doctor prior to the visit.

The approximate duration of the visit is around 1:30-1:50 hours, and visits are offered in both English and Spanish. As mentioned above, this type of visit is led by a certified Starlight guide, so it is essential to book in advance.

Furthermore, this type of activity is subject to weather conditions and/or the operation of the Observatory, as there may be cancellations or date changes due to weather conditions or telescope operation.
