Instead, these telescopes detect them indirectly through a fascinating physical phenomenon known as Cherenkov radiation.

When a high-energy gamma ray enters the atmosphere, it interacts with atmospheric particles, producing a cascade of secondary particles. Some of these particles travel faster than light travels through air — although never faster than light in a vacuum — generating an extremely brief flash of bluish light.

This is Cherenkov radiation.

The enormous mirrors of the LSTs collect these flashes, which last only a few nanoseconds. By analysing them, scientists can reconstruct the direction and energy of the original gamma rays and investigate extraordinary cosmic phenomena, including active galactic nuclei, pulsars and gamma-ray bursts.

Giant Telescopes Without Domes — Built for Speed

Unlike many conventional optical telescopes, the LSTs do not require protective domes. Their enormous 23-metre reflecting surfaces are exposed to the open air, and the entire structures are engineered to move remarkably quickly.

They can reposition to any accessible region of the sky in approximately 20 seconds.

This rapid response is essential for observing transient astronomical events, particularly gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), some of the most powerful explosions known in the Universe.

Such events may evolve within seconds or minutes, so the ability to respond immediately to astronomical alerts is crucial.

Four Telescopes Working Together

The four LSTs on La Palma are designed to observe the same region of the sky simultaneously, collecting information from slightly different positions.

This technique, known as stereoscopic observation, allows scientists to reconstruct atmospheric particle showers more accurately, improve measurements of gamma-ray energies and arrival directions, and distinguish genuine gamma-ray signals from background cosmic-ray events.

Although this approach may resemble interferometry, a technique used in other astronomical observatories, there is an important distinction.

The LSTs do not combine light coherently to produce interference patterns, as an interferometer does. Instead, they use simultaneous observations from different viewpoints to reconstruct the particle showers generated in the atmosphere.

Together, the four telescopes form a coordinated system capable of studying the high-energy Universe with greater sensitivity and precision than a single telescope.

Why Were the LST Telescopes Built on La Palma?

La Palma was not chosen by chance.

The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, located approximately 2,400 metres above sea level, offers exceptional astronomical observing conditions: dark skies, generally favourable atmospheric conditions and a privileged geographical position in the Northern Hemisphere.

The island also benefits from decades of experience in international astrophysical research, established scientific infrastructure and specific legislation protecting the quality of its night sky.

For Cherenkov telescopes, dark skies are particularly important because they must detect extraordinarily faint and brief flashes of light produced in the atmosphere.

The CTAO project will operate two major sites: CTAO-North on La Palma and CTAO-South in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Together, they will provide access to the high-energy Universe from both hemispheres.

A World-Class International Scientific Project

The four LSTs are part of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), one of the world’s major next-generation scientific research infrastructures.

CTAO aims to become the world’s largest and most sensitive ground-based gamma-ray observatory, opening new opportunities to investigate some of the most extreme physical processes in the Universe.

The international collaboration developing the LSTs brings together more than 500 scientists and engineers from 25 institutions across 11 countries: Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, Spain and Switzerland.

Spain and Japan play particularly important roles in the construction and development of these telescopes.

Several Spanish research institutions contribute to their components, control systems, scientific programmes and data analysis tools.

Among them is the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), the institution responsible for managing the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory.

The construction of the LSTs represents far more than the installation of four new telescopes: it is the result of years of international cooperation, technological development and scientific research.

Can You Visit the LST Telescopes on La Palma?

This is one of the most common questions among visitors who discover these impressive structures at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory.

The LST telescopes are part of authorised guided visits to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, where visitors can learn how astronomers work, what instruments they use and why La Palma plays such an important role in international astrophysical research.

These visits take place during the daytime, in small groups, and are subject to weather conditions and the operational requirements of the Observatory.

At AstroLaPalma, we offer guided visits to the Observatory, bringing professional astronomy closer to the general public through scientifically accurate, engaging and accessible explanations, with no previous knowledge of astronomy required.

Discover our guided visits to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory

Inauguration of the Four LST Telescopes: 15 October 2026

The official inauguration of the four LST telescopes at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory is scheduled for 15 October 2026.

The first telescope, LST-1, was inaugurated in 2018 and has since undergone commissioning activities and scientific observations.

With the addition of the other three telescopes, the planned array of Large-Sized Telescopes at CTAO-North is now complete.

The inauguration marks an important milestone, although it does not mean that all four instruments will immediately begin regular scientific operations.
