Turbulence distorts images and limits the details we can resolve. To overcome this, the GTC has incorporated <b>GTCAO<\/b>, its first <b>adaptive optics<\/b> system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">According to the GTC technical documentation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gtc.iac.es\/instruments\/gtcao\"><b>https:\/\/www.gtc.iac.es\/instruments\/gtcao<\/b><\/a>), the system can correct atmospheric distortions hundreds of times per second, reducing the effects of seeing and enabling the telescope to reach <b>0.03\u20130.05 arcseconds<\/b> resolution in the infrared. Put into perspective: that\u2019s roughly <b>20 times sharper<\/b> than a conventional ground-based observation without correction.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><b>What science does GTCAO enable?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li3\">Protoplanetary disks with details that were previously blurred<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\">A much clearer view of the <b>Galactic Center<\/b> of the Milky Way<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><b>Direct imaging<\/b> observations of <b>exoplanets<\/b><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\">Fine-scale studies of star-forming regions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\">GTCAO is the foundation for the GTC\u2019s new high-precision instruments\u2014especially FRIDA.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>FRIDA: the GTC\u2019s infrared jewel<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><b>FRIDA<\/b> (inFRared Imager and Dissector for AO of GTC) is the first instrument specifically designed to take full advantage of GTCAO. It is expected to be operational by mid-2026 (GTCAO+FRIDA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It can work both as a <b>high-resolution infrared camera<\/b> and as an <b>integral field spectrograph<\/b>, meaning it captures a full spectrum in every pixel of the image.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">On the official instrument page (<a nuclei (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iac.es\/es\/astrophysical\/nucleos-activos-de-galaxias\">AGN<\/a>)<\/b><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\">Observing star-forming regions with unprecedented sharpness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\">One of FRIDA\u2019s greatest strengths is the combination of <b>extreme spatial resolution<\/b> with <b>detailed spectroscopy<\/b>\u2014something only a handful of telescopes worldwide can deliver.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>HYPERCAM: the ultra-fast camera capturing the \u201cimpossible\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">While FRIDA and GTCAO focus on sharpness and detail, <b>HYPERCAM<\/b> is the instrument built for phenomena that change in fractions of a second.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">HYPERCAM, developed by the University of Sheffield in collaboration with the IAC, can capture <b>up to 1,000 images per second<\/b> in five simultaneous bands (u, g, r, i, z).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Its official technical sheet is available at: <a systems<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\">Measuring <b>exoplanet transits<\/b> with extreme time precision<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\">Capturing stellar occultations by asteroids and TNOs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>Highlight result<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">One of HYPERCAM\u2019s most striking achievements was the observation of <b>the coldest neutron star recorded to date<\/b>, reported by the IAC.es<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Results like this show why HYPERCAM has become essential for high-speed astronomy.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>GRANCAIN: the GTC\u2019s future hunter of exoplanet atmospheres<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">The next major step for the GTC will be <b>GRANCAIN<\/b>, a high-resolution spectrograph designed to probe exoplanet atmospheres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It will be optimized to detect <b>molecules such as H<\/b><span class=\"s2\"><b>\u2082<\/b><\/span><b>O, CO<\/b><span class=\"s2\"><b>\u2082<\/b><\/span><b>, CH<\/b><span class=\"s2\"><b>\u2084<\/b><\/span><b>, and sodium<\/b>, enabling studies of:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li3\">Atmospheric winds on hot exoplanets<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\">Chemical signatures that may point toward habitability<\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\">Thermal and compositional structures in super-Earths and hot Neptunes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\">Although still in the design phase, this instrument will help turn the GTC into one of the most important ground-based observatories for studying planetary atmospheres.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>A uniquely powerful instrument combination even compared to major international facilities such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/spain\/teles-instr\/paranal-observatory\/vlt\">VLT<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/keckobservatory.org\/our-story\/telescopes\">Keck<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>La Palma: a privileged place to explore the Universe<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">All of this is possible thanks to La Palma\u2019s exceptional sky quality, protected by the <b>Sky Law<\/b>, and a scientific environment led by the <b>Instituto de Astrof\u00edsica de Canarias<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p
