The Gran Telescopio Canarias joins the first European planetary defence mission<\/b><\/h1>\n

A mission to protect the Earth<\/b><\/h3>\n

What if, one day, an asteroid decided to disrupt our daily routine from space? Don\u2019t worry\u2014there\u2019s no immediate danger, but there\u2019s an exciting reason to look up. Europe has launched its first planetary defence mission<\/b>, and the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC)<\/b>, located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory<\/b> on La Palma, plays a leading role.<\/p>\n

The project is called HERA<\/b><\/a>, part of the European Space Agency (ESA)<\/a><\/b> programme. Its goal: to study the outcome of the previous DART mission<\/b>, in which a spacecraft impacted the asteroid Dimorphos to alter its orbit.<\/p>\n

Now, with HERA, scientists aim to analyse the effects of that impact<\/b>, understand how the asteroid responded, and learn more about our ability to protect planet Earth.<\/p>\n

The role of the Gran Telescopio Canarias<\/b><\/h3>\n

From its privileged location on La Palma<\/b>, the GTC<\/b><\/a>\u2014the world\u2019s largest optical-infrared telescope\u2014observes the Didymos\u2013Dimorphos system<\/b> with unparalleled precision. With its 10.4-metre mirror, the GTC studies the light reflected by the asteroid\u2019s fragments to reveal their composition, density, and behaviour after the collision<\/b>.<\/p>\n

All of this is possible thanks to the exceptional conditions of the sky above the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory<\/b>, where the atmosphere is so clean and dark that it allows astronomers to capture details impossible elsewhere.
\nFrom this corner of the Atlantic, the Instituto de Astrof\u00edsica de Canarias (IAC)<\/b><\/a> leads a research effort that combines technology, science, and vision for the future.<\/p>\n
