Its establishment followed years of meteorological and astronomical studies confirming the exceptional quality of La Palma\u2019s skies for astronomy.<br data-start=\"1217\" data-end=\"1220\" \/>Since its beginnings, the ORM has hosted telescopes operated by institutions from Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, Norway, Germany, Sweden, and Japan, becoming a model of sustained international scientific collaboration.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1443\" data-end=\"1446\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1448\" data-end=\"1527\"><strong data-start=\"1452\" data-end=\"1525\">Astronomical Infrastructure at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1528\" data-end=\"1630\">Below is a list of the main telescopes currently operating at the ORM, grouped by type of observation:<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1632\" data-end=\"1635\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"1637\" data-end=\"1680\"> <strong data-start=\"1645\" data-end=\"1680\">Optical and Infrared Telescopes<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"2682\">\n<li data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"1939\">\n<p data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1720\"><strong data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1718\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gtc.iac.es\/GTChome.php\">Gran Telescopio Canarias<\/a> (GTC)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1723\" data-end=\"1939\">\n<li data-start=\"1723\" data-end=\"1746\">\n<p data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1746\">10.4-meter aperture<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1749\" data-end=\"1939\">\n<p data-start=\"1751\" data-end=\"1939\">Operated by the IAC, it is the largest optical-infrared telescope in the world. It has played a key role in the characterization of exoplanets, galaxy evolution, and dark matter detection.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1941\" data-end=\"2140\">\n<p data-start=\"1943\" data-end=\"1981\"><strong data-start=\"1943\" data-end=\"1979\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ing.iac.es\/astronomy\/telescopes\/wht\/\">William Herschel Telescope<\/a> (WHT)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1984\" data-end=\"2140\">\n<li data-start=\"1984\" data-end=\"2006\">\n<p data-start=\"1986\" data-end=\"2006\">4.2-meter aperture<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2009\" data-end=\"2140\">\n<p data-start=\"2011\" data-end=\"2140\">Managed by the Isaac Newton Group (UK-Spain), it features cutting-edge spectroscopic instrumentation for observing faint objects.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2318\">\n<p data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2184\"><strong data-start=\"2144\" data-end=\"2182\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tng.iac.es\">Telescopio Nazionale Galileo<\/a> (TNG)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2187\" data-end=\"2318\">\n<li data-start=\"2187\" data-end=\"2210\">\n<p data-start=\"2189\" data-end=\"2210\">3.58-meter aperture<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2213\" data-end=\"2318\">\n<p data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2318\">Owned by the Italian INAF, it excels in high-resolution spectroscopy for planetary and stellar studies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2320\" data-end=\"2513\">\n<p data-start=\"2322\" data-end=\"2358\"><strong data-start=\"2322\" data-end=\"2356\">Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2361\" data-end=\"2513\">\n<li data-start=\"2361\" data-end=\"2384\">\n<p data-start=\"2363\" data-end=\"2384\">2.56-meter aperture<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2387\" data-end=\"2513\">\n<p data-start=\"2389\" data-end=\"2513\">Operated by Nordic countries, its versatility allows for diverse research lines, including solar and exoplanet observations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2515\" data-end=\"2682\">\n<p data-start=\"2517\" data-end=\"2542\"><strong data-start=\"2517\" data-end=\"2540\">Liverpool Telescope<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2545\" data-end=\"2682\">\n<li data-start=\"2545\" data-end=\"2565\">\n<p data-start=\"2547\" data-end=\"2565\">2-meter aperture<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2568\" data-end=\"2682\">\n<p data-start=\"2570\" data-end=\"2682\">Fully robotic, it specializes in automated tracking of transient events such as supernovae and gamma-ray bursts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"2684\" data-end=\"2687\" \/>\n<h4 data-start=\"2689\" data-end=\"2750\">\u269b\ufe0f <strong data-start=\"2697\" data-end=\"2750\">Cherenkov Telescopes for High-Energy Astrophysics<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul data-start=\"2752\" data-end=\"3236\">\n<li data-start=\"2752\" data-end=\"2975\">\n<p data-start=\"2754\" data-end=\"2772\"><strong data-start=\"2754\" data-end=\"2770\">MAGIC I &amp; II<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2775\" data-end=\"2975\">\n<li data-start=\"2775\" data-end=\"2975\">\n<p data-start=\"2777\" data-end=\"2975\">17-meter Cherenkov reflectors. Operated by a European consortium, they are essential for detecting very high-energy gamma rays from extreme phenomena such as blazars, pulsars, or active black holes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2977\" data-end=\"3236\">\n<p data-start=\"2979\" data-end=\"3014\"><strong data-start=\"2979\" data-end=\"3012\">LST-1 (Large-Sized Telescope)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3017\" data-end=\"3236\">\n<li data-start=\"3017\" data-end=\"3236\">\n<p data-start=\"3019\" data-end=\"3236\">23-meter aperture. First prototype of the northern branch of the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Designed to detect low-energy gamma rays (20\u2013200 GeV), it is the most sensitive Cherenkov telescope of its kind.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"3238\" data-end=\"3241\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3243\" data-end=\"3299\"><strong data-start=\"3247\" data-end=\"3299\">Solar Observation at the ORM: Present and Future<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3301\" data-end=\"3391\">Although less known for it, the ORM also hosts specialized solar research instrumentation.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3393\" data-end=\"4033\">\n<li data-start=\"3393\" data-end=\"3628\">\n<p data-start=\"3395\" data-end=\"3628\"> <strong data-start=\"3398\" data-end=\"3427\">Swedish Solar Tower (SST)<\/strong><br data-start=\"3427\" data-end=\"3430\" \/>High-resolution solar telescope operated by the Institute for Solar Physics of Stockholm University. It has pioneered studies in photospheric dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, and sunspot evolution.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3630\" data-end=\"4033\">\n<p data-start=\"3632\" data-end=\"4033\"> <strong data-start=\"3635\" data-end=\"3690\">European Solar Telescope (EST) \u2013 Under Construction<\/strong><br data-start=\"3690\" data-end=\"3693\" \/>Set to become the largest solar telescope in Europe with a 4.2-meter aperture. Construction begins in La Palma in 2024, aiming to revolutionize high-resolution spatial and temporal solar observation. It will analyze the physical processes governing the solar atmosphere, with implications for space weather and fundamental plasma physics.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"4035\" data-end=\"4038\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"4040\" data-end=\"4093\"><strong data-start=\"4044\" data-end=\"4093\">Telescopes in Development and Future Projects<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4095\" data-end=\"4159\">The ORM continues to expand. Among the upcoming instruments are:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4161\" data-end=\"5038\">\n<li data-start=\"4161\" data-end=\"4401\">\n<p data-start=\"4163\" data-end=\"4401\"> <strong data-start=\"4166\" data-end=\"4197\">New Robotic Telescope (NRT)<\/strong><br data-start=\"4197\" data-end=\"4200\" \/>With a 4-meter aperture, it will be the world\u2019s largest robotic telescope. It will replace the Liverpool Telescope and enable ultra-fast observation of transient events with unprecedented efficiency.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4403\" data-end=\"4650\">\n<p data-start=\"4405\" data-end=\"4650\">\u26a1 <strong data-start=\"4407\" data-end=\"4453\">WARPS (Wide-Area Rapid Positioning System)<\/strong><br data-start=\"4453\" data-end=\"4456\" \/>A platform of lightweight, mobile telescopes designed for rapid response to astronomical alerts (kilonovae, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae). Developed by the IAC and the University of La Laguna.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4652\" data-end=\"5038\">\n<p data-start=\"4654\" data-end=\"5038\"> <strong data-start=\"4657\" data-end=\"4698\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctao.org\/\">Cherenkov Telescope Array<\/a> (CTA-North)<\/strong><br data-start=\"4698\" data-end=\"4701\" \/>An international project to build the world\u2019s largest ground-based observatory for very high-energy gamma rays. La Palma will host the northern array, with more than a dozen telescopes of various sizes. It will explore the extreme universe, search for dark matter signals, and study energetic astrophysical processes like never before.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"5040\" data-end=\"5043\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"5045\" data-end=\"5111\"><strong data-start=\"5049\" data-end=\"5111\">The Role of the Instituto de Astrof\u00edsica de Canarias (IAC)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5113\" data-end=\"5409\">The IAC has led the planning, development, operation, and international outreach of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory from its origins. Through multilateral agreements and excellence-driven scientific programs, it has positioned the Canary Islands as a strategic center for global astronomy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5411\" data-end=\"5626\">In addition, the IAC spearheads key initiatives in sky protection, cutting-edge technology, researcher training, and high-impact scientific outreach \u2014 all of which strengthen the long-term sustainability of the ORM.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5628\" data-end=\"5631\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"5633\" data-end=\"5704\"><strong data-start=\"5637\" data-end=\"5704\">Conclusion: 40 Years of Observation, Innovation, and Leadership<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5706\" data-end=\"5984\">At 40 years, the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory stands as a model of scientific, technological, and institutional success.
