The sky of La Palma is a treasure that deserves to be preserved. Due to its clarity, beauty, and darkness, this island has become a global reference for astronomical observation, being one of the best places to admire the cosmos. However, light pollution always threatens this invaluable resource, affecting both science and enjoyment of the sky as well as biodiversity. It is estimated that light pollution increases by 2% every year. For this reason we have organised the following public talks in La Palma to raise awareness about light pollution issues and to continue the protection of our skies. The talks are organised by AstroLaPalma<\/strong>, as part of AstroFest La Palma<\/a> 2024<\/p>\n

This event is part of a series of activities during AstroFest 2024, highlighting La Palma’s astronomical and cultural wealth while promoting respect and conservation of the nocturnal environment.<\/p>\n

Experts in Dark Sky Protection<\/h3>\n

The event will feature recognized speakers who will address the causes, effects, and solutions to light pollution in our communities.<\/p>\n

Susana Mal\u00f3n: Pioneer in the Fight Against Light Pollution<\/strong>
\nSusana Mal\u00f3n is a leading figure in the defense of dark skies and the study of the impact of artificial light on our environment. Through her work, Susana explores how light pollution affects biodiversity, health, and quality of life, in addition to hindering astronomical observation. Her talk will provide a global and practical perspective on how we can minimize this growing problem.<\/p>\n

Susana Mal\u00f3n is the CEO of Lum\u00ednica Ambiental<\/a> and has received various awards:<\/p>\n

– Starlight Award (2016)<\/strong>: For her work in protecting dark skies and commitment to preserving areas free from light pollution.
\n– First Prize for New Business Initiative<\/strong> awarded by the Ministry of the Environment.
\n– Recognition for Excellence in Physics<\/strong>\u00a0from the Official College of Physicists.
\n– She has also been recognized in the Emprendeverde Network<\/strong> (2012) and has participated in events like TEDx Passeig Des Born.<\/p>\n

Federico de la Paz: The Sky Office of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC)<\/strong>
\nThe Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) will also be present through its Sky Office, an entity that works to protect the Canary skies, which are considered a resource of scientific and cultural value. In his presentation, Federico de la Paz will share the measures implemented in La Palma to preserve this unique environment, as well as the importance of these actions for science, tourism, and local well-being.<\/p>\n
