The solar eclipse of June 2021, as seen from Spain and from La Palma has been partial and with a very modest coverage. This eclipse was best seen in northern Europe and North America and especially from the Arctic.

In the Arctic (Canada, Greenland and northeastern Russia) it was annular in shape but at lower latitudes, it only looked as if the moon was taking a bite out of the sun. The further south, the smaller the “bite”. So from the Canary Islands, it was hardly noticeable, not even the brightness of the sun changed, while in the Arctic it suddenly went dark.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, obscuring the image of the Sun. As the orbits of planets are elliptical, the Earth-Moon and Earth-Sun (and therefore Sun-Moon) distances are not always the same. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is too far away from us to completely block out the Sun, leaving a circle of light around it. However, if they are closer together, a total solar eclipse is possible.

* Please remember that for the observation of any solar eclipse you will need approved eye protection. Never look at the sun directly or using home-made accesories.

When will we see another eclipse from Spain?

The last partial solar eclipse visible in Spain occurred on 21 August 2017, albeit in poor conditions as it occurred at sunset and it was difficult to see. The next one will be seen on 25 October 2022, but only visible in the northeast of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands. To see a total solar eclipse we will have to wait until 12 August 2026, followed by another on 2 August the following year. And these last two will be spectacular. And of course, we will be prepared.

The seventh edition of the AstroMaster La Palma has ended this sunday 2nd June and once again has been a success. This international workshop has put once again La Palma on the spot for astronomy due to its international scope. A total a 14 participants from countries such as Japan, USA, UK, Italy, Mexico and Argentina,  have learned from the most reknown astrophotographer in the world: Babak Tafreshi (The World at Night,TWAN and a National Geographic photographer).

El curso para profesionales Astromaster volverá a poner a La Palma en el punto de mira internacional de la astrofotografía entre el 15 y el 21 de mayo. Más de 15 asistentes, entre los que hay un astronauta de la Agencia Europea Espacial, tomarán parte en este taller que por segunda vez se celebra en el marco de Astrofest, el festival de eventos de temática astronómica organizado por la Consejería de Turismo del Cabildo de La Palma para la promoción de la isla como destino de estrellas.

Babak Tafreshi, fundador y director de la asociación internacional The World at Night (TWAN) y fotógrafo de National Geographic, formará a los alumnos en un taller intensivo de 7 días que abarcará técnicas de astrofotografía de paisajes nocturnos, procesamiento de imágenes y timelapse, entre otros. Este año, los participantes provienen de EE.UU., Kuwait, India, Australia, Alemania, Francia, Suiza y Reino Unido.

La consejera de Turismo del Cabildo de La Palma, Alicia Vanoostende, destaca que el Cabildo Insular, a través de Astrofest, apoya la celebración de este evento “por su consolidación como un encuentro de trabajo de excelente calidad dado el máximo reconocimiento profesional internacional de sus instructores”. En las seis anteriores ediciones de Astromaster han participado 90 personas de 31 países.

Astromaster es un curso internacional de astrofotografía creado y organizado por la doctora en Ciencias, Ana María García Suárez, astroemprendedora y directora ejecutiva de AstroLaPalma S.L y Lapalmastars.com.

“Es indudable el efecto promocional de las fotos y vídeos de excelente calidad producidos por los participantes de Astromaster, que contribuyen a difundir las excelencias de los cielos de La Palma. Eso produce un efecto llamada para otros fotógrafos aficionados o profesionales y, a su vez, es un reconocimiento del valor paisajístico y de la calidad del cielo de nuestra isla a nivel internacional en un mercado muy selecto, con alto poder adquisitivo y entre los profesionales de la fotografía. Así, La Palma se va convirtiendo en una de las mecas para hacer fotos nocturnas” señala Ana García.
