Five years of Starlight delights

In 2012 La Palma was awarded as the First Starlight Reserve on Earth. It is an honour given by UNESCO confirming that the island is committed to the defense of the quality of the night sky and it is also committed to providing access to the light of the stars for all people.

For this reason, La Palma is promoting values associated with the quality and enjoyment of the sky, such as cultural (archaeoastronomical sites), scientific (astronomical research), astronomical (Observatories and amateur observation), landscape or natural (astronomical viewpoints) and activities such as those of Astronomy Tours (lapalmastars.com) and other companies ranging from catering, thematic accommodations and organization of astronomical events.

At present, La Palma has exclusion zones where the conditions of natural light and sharpness of the night sky are maintained intact and it also has a participatory action plan and a set of recommendations aimed at preserving or recovering the quality of the night sky as much as possible.
